Hearing Myself

Throughout my late teens and into my early twenties, I was an avid journal writer. I took about a twelve year hiatus from that habit. But at the beginning of the year, I was thinking about the times I felt most content with myself & determined to start doing the things I did when I felt comfortable in my own skin. Writing in my journal every night is one of those things.

Jason and I have long known that we are happier as a family when the computer is not the chief source of entertainment for our children. But I had to admit to myself that the time I spend in front of the computer wasn't contributing to our family happiness either. So, we decided to take a week -- just a week -- where the only screen time would be Jason's work & my twice-a-day e-mail checks.

That's why the blog hasn't been updated in a while. I'd been using the blog as my substitute journal, but when you blog, the audience isn't yourself. I needed to hear my own voice again to figure out what things would make me feel content with who I am. That mission is still in progress. But it is progressing.

You can do both. You do write things in a journal that you might not share with other people.

I feel the same way- i have to keep a personal journal or I don't get down all my true feelings.

Whoa - me too, Starr! I mean, about getting back into journal writing so that I would only have myself as my audience. It has been so fulfilling, and SO much easier to write. I do like blogging, too, but for sure, they are not the same thing in my life.
Have you ever done free-writing? Just taking a couple of sheets of paper and writing without ceasing until the paper is out or until you're done? I used to do it all the time, and I might start up again. Like you said, I could really hear my own thoughts when I knew I could throw the pages away after I was done.

I find that so true for myself. When there is a problem that I have to figure out it doesn't go out to the world it goes on paper for me to work through. But, glad you are posting and have really enjoyed reading posts.
